CALIFORNIA (Sept. 23) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team fell by a 1-0 margin on Sunday afternoon versus Seton Hill at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 1-2-3 this season with a 0-2 mark in league action after playing their first home match since Sept. 1. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 4-0-3 overall behind a 1-0-2 record in conference play.
Cal U created early chances in the opening minutes of the contest with a pair of shots and a corner kick. Seton Hill responded with an offensive attack that required two saves from senior goalkeeper
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) in just over a minute. Over a 10-minute stretch, the Vulcans fired three more shots, but were unable to produce a shot on goal. The Cal U defense was able to stop a late offensive push by the Griffins, as both teams went into the break scoreless.
Seton Hill peppered the net with four shots in the initial eight minutes of the second half looking to break the scoreless drought. Griffin sophomore Alex Dyson scored the initial goal of the match, his third of the season, in the 60th minute with an assist from freshman Tormod Simonsen to take a 1-0 lead. Exner once again came up with a pair of saves in just over a two minute-span to keep Cal U within striking distance. At the 86:32-mark, junior
Marcos Garcia, Jr. (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) generated the best scoring opportunity for the Vulcans after a ball played through to him was saved by the goalie, as Seton Hill registered the shutout victory.
Exner registered six saves on 16 shots and played all 90 minutes of action.
The Griffins held a 16-7 shot advantage, while the Vulcans had a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
