Cal U earns victory at Washington & Jefferson, 7-2

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Sept. 18) – In a rare meeting between Washington County schools, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 2-1 overall after playing three non-conference dual matches in the past week. Meanwhile, the Presidents, a Division III program, drop to 3-2 this season.

Cal U opened the contest by winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. The nine-point format was used during this event due to W&J serving as the host, which means each doubles match win received one point. At the first position, freshmen Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) and Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) swept Rachel Johnson and Maya Krishnasamy by an 8-0 margin. Junior Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and freshman Tanya Madhok (Mumbai, India/Jamnabai Narsee) posted an 8-3 victory against Jade Annaldo and Vanesa Hyde at second doubles. At the third slot, senior Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) and sophomore Gina Greer (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) dropped 8-2 match to Megan Berard and Caitlin Shellhamer.

The Vulcans sealed the match victory with five wins in singles play, including four via straight sets. Weisen registered a 6-3, 6-1 victory at first singles versus Krishnasamy, while Ganahl posted her first singles win of the season at the second position over Johnson by a 6-4, 6-0 count. At third singles, Madhok claimed her initial singles victory in straight sets by a 6-3, 6-2 margin versus Berard. Gallagher secured a 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 win against Annaldo at the fourth position. Wohar recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Saipriya Potluri at the fifth slot to earn her first singles win, while sophomore Emilee Leydig (Windber, Pa./Windber) dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match versus Shellhamer at sixth singles.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when it hosts West Liberty in non-conference play at Roadman Park, starting at 12 p.m.
