CALIFORNIA (Sept. 13) – Playing in their second match in two days, the Vulcans suffered a 6-1 loss against West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon in non-conference play at Roadman Park.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team drop to 1-1 this season in dual matches. Meanwhile, the Bobcats start the season with a 1-0 record after posting a 9-8 record last year.
West Virginia Wesleyan swept all three doubles matches that were contested on Thursday. The freshmen duo of
Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) and
Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) fell to Sai Sakamoto and Mariona Junyer at the first position by a 6-3 margin. At the second slot, senior
Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) and junior
Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) were defeated 6-3 by Cecila Martinez Oliver and Lauren Graham. Sophomore
Emilee Leydig (Windber, Pa./Windber) and freshman
Tanya Madhok (Mumbai, India/Jamnabai Narsee) suffered a 6-1 loss to Rebecca Osborne and Julia Yanes at the third position.
The Bobcats completed the match by winning five of the six singles matches to earn the victory. Weisen secured a straight sets win by a score of 6-2, 6-0 versus Sakamoto at first singles. In the second position, Ganahl dropped a 6-3, 6-3 contest to Oliver, while Madhok lost at the third slot to Graham by a 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 margin. Gallagher was downed 6-2, 6-0 against Yanes at fourth singles before Wohar fell by a 6-0, 6-1 count to Junyer in the fifth position. In the sixth slot, Leydig dropped 6-0, 6-0 versus Osborne.
The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 18, when they travel to face Washington & Jefferson in nearby Washington, Pennsylvania, starting at 5 p.m.
