WACO, Texas (Dec. 5) – California University of Pennsylvania junior defensive back
Lamont McPhatter II (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) and junior offensive lineman
Craig McCorkle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) were both named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-Americans on Wednesday morning.
McPhatter earned AFCA First-Team All-America honors and McCorkle received AFCA Second-Team All-America laurels. This marks the first time in school history in which the Vulcans have featured multiple AFCA All-Americans, as until 2016 the organization only recognized a single All-America Team. Additionally, Cal U has now featured an AFCA All-American in three-consecutive years and nine times in the last 14 seasons.
A team captain, McPhatter led the team and ranked third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with five interceptions. He led NCAA Division II, and ranked fourth among all NCAA divisions, with 198 interception return yards and tied for the lead in Super Region One with 0.6 interception per game. McPhatter finished third on the team with 63 tackles (37 solo) after tallying at least five stops in eight of nine games played. He also recorded 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns as a junior.
McPhatter has been selected both the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year and the D2CCA Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year in 2018. He has been an All-PSAC West First-Team selection in each of his two years with the program and has also received D2CCA all-region status for a consecutive season. McPhatter was also the only defensive player in Super Region One nominated for the Harlon Hill Trophy and was the lone defensive back of the 37 national nominees for the prestigious honor.
A New Castle product, McPhatter is on pace to earn his bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in finance, plus a minor in management, next week.
McCorkle started 10 games at left tackle this season after making a combined 19 starts at right tackle the previous two years. He is the team's active leader with 30 career starts despite missing four games over the last two seasons due to injury. McCorkle earned All-PSAC West honors for a third-straight year, receiving first-team status as both a sophomore and junior.
A native of Ohio, McCorkle helped anchor an offensive line this year for a team that led the PSAC and finished ninth in NCAA Division II with 0.64 sack per game. The Vulcans also paced the league and ranked seventh in the country with a .487 third-down conversion percentage.
McCorkle, who was also a team captain, is set to complete his bachelor's degree in sociology next week.
