Vulcans suffer loss to Shippensburg, 61-58

MacAdams, Collins account for a combined 31 points; Game featured eight lead changes and five ties

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 25) – The freshmen duo of Collin MacAdams (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) combined for 31 points, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team fell 61-58 versus Shippensburg on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center in non-conference play.
 
With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 0-3 this season in their home debut after being idle for over two weeks. Meanwhile, the Raiders improve to 5-0 overall while playing their first road contest of the year.
 
MacAdams led all players with 16 points on 7-of-16 attempts, including a pair from long range, and added eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Collins finished with 15 points on 7-of-15 from the field and tallied six rebounds and four steals in 40 minutes of action.
 
Sophomore transfer Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) posted eight points, two rebounds and a team-leading three assists in 35 minutes. Classmate Nathaniel Chambers, Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) also totaled eight points and three rebounds while playing 27 minutes and freshman Kenneth Lee III (Rankin, Pa./Woodland Hills) went three-of-five from the floor in 21 minutes off the bench.
 
Shippensburg opened the contest by taking a 10-4 lead at the 15:22-mark after making a three-pointer to begin the game. Pegram halted the run with a layup before Shippensburg answered with a pair of baskets to hold a 14-6 advantage. The Vulcans countered with a 12-3 run after shooting five-of-seven from the field, including five points from MacAdams, to take an 18-17 lead. The Raiders responded with their own 12-4 run to reclaim the lead at 29-22 after making a pair from beyond the arc. Cal U closed the gap to 32-28 on two layups from Collins before Shippensburg responded with a three-pointer. Lee made a shot from three-point range to close the first half, as the Vulcans trailed 35-33.
 
In the second half, Cal U grabbed the lead on a three-pointer from MacAdams before the contest would be tied three times in the opening six-plus minutes. The Vulcans claimed their largest lead of the game at 49-41 at the 9:38-mark following an 8-0 run after shooting four-of-five. The Raiders countered with an 11-4 rally before tying the contest at the free-throw line, 55-55. Cal U reclaimed the lead on a jumper from MacAdams before the Raiders knocked down a three-pointer to take a 58-57 advantage with 1:45 remaining. Shippensburg held a 61-58 lead with four seconds left before a shot from beyond midcourt missed the mark as time expired, as the Raider posted the victory.
 
Cal U finished the game with a .431 field-goal percentage (25-of-58) while converting just 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Shippensburg shot 34.8 percent (24-of-69) from the floor and made 7-of-32 (21.9 percent) from long range. The Raiders held a 47-36 rebounding advantage and converted 27 second-chance points.
 
Junior Lamar Talley finished with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes, while teammate John Castello totaled 13 points and six rebounds. Redshirt freshman Dom Sleva posted 10 points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.
 
The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 27, when they host Davis & Elkins at the Convocation Center, starting at 6 p.m.
