Cal U posts win over Davis & Elkins, 63-55

Head coach Danny Sancomb earns first victory with Vulcans; Cal U features four players with double-digit points

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 27) – Head coach Danny Sancomb secured his first victory with the Vulcans on Tuesday night, as the California University of the Pennsylvania men's basketball team posted a 63-55 win over Davis & Elkins in non-conference play at the Convocation Center.
 
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 1-3 overall after their initial three opponents this season have posted a 15-3 overall record. Meanwhile, the Senators drop to 1-4 overall behind a 1-1 mark against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents.  
 
Sophomore Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) led the team with 15 points behind five-of-seven from the free-throw line and totaled four rebounds, four assists and four steals in 40 minutes of action. Freshman Collin MacAdams (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) posted his first collegiate double-double with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds (four offensive), while adding three steals in 33 minutes.
 
Freshman Jermaine Hall, Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Severn School) also finished with 11 points and tallied seven rebounds, while classmate Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) notched 10 points, six rebounds (four offensive), three assists, two steals and two blocks in 36 minutes of play.
 
The Senators opened the contest with three-straight baskets to take a 6-0 lead at the 18:12-mark before Pegram ended the run with a three-pointer. Davis & Elkins built the lead to 11-5 following a shot from beyond the arc, but the Vulcans responded with a 6-0 run to tie the contest at 11-11 with 12:53 remaining the in the first half. The Senators countered with a seven-consecutive points to reclaim the lead at 18-11. Cal U answered with a 19-3 rally over the next seven-plus minutes with junior Jordan Gessner (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) leading the team with seven points. During the run, Davis & Elkins went 1-of-11 from the floor, while the Vulcans took a 30-21 advantage. The Senators stopped the run with a jumper before MacAdams made a shot at the 1:14-mark. Davis & Elkins closed the first half with a layup, while Cal U took a 32-25 lead into the break.
 
Davis & Elkins quickly trimmed the deficit to 37-35 in the second half after making four-of-six shots. Hall answered back with seven-straight points, including a three-pointer, to put the Vulcans ahead 44-34 at the 14:13-mark. The Senators countered once again with a 17-7 run to tie the game at 51-51 after knocking down seven-of-nine attempts, including a pair from long range. The pace of the contest slowed over the next five minutes, as Cal U posted a 7-0 rally. The Senators managed to make a pair of shots to cut the deficit to 59-55, but the Vulcans made four-of-five from the charity stripe to seal the victory, 63-55.
 
The Vulcans shot 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the field while converting 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Senators finished the game with a .453 field-goal percentage (24-of-53) and made just 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) from beyond the arc. Cal U held a slight 40-35 rebounding edge and converted 18 second-chance points The Vulcans also forced a season-high 22 turnovers that resulted in 27 points.
 
Junior Trevor English led all players with 20 points on 10-of-11 shooting and posted eight rebounds and two steals. Senior Edmund Parker finished with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while freshman Marcus Friend added nine points on four-of-six shooting in 17 minutes off the bench.
 
Cal U opens PSAC Crossover play on Saturday, Dec. 1, when it travels to face Millersville at 3 p.m.
