Vulcans post victory over Shippensburg, 6-1

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 5) – Featuring virtually an entirely new lineup, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory against Shippensburg on Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action at Roadman Park.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 3-2 overall after playing their first dual match since Sept. 22. Meanwhile, the Raiders fall to 0-3 this season while playing its second match this week.

Cal U swept doubles play for the first time this fall to earn the doubles point. At the first position, freshmen Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) and Tanya Madhok (Mumbai, India/Jamnabai Narsee) posted a 6-0 win against Kaylin Gallagher and Mary Kate Mullarkey. Freshman Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) and senior Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) tallied a 6-0 victory at second doubles over Victoria Galanti and Kayla Tryanski. The Vulcans closed out the doubles session when juniors Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and McKenzie Wilson (Traralgon, Australia/St. Paul's Anglican) earned a 6-2 win against Casey Miller and Aubrey Carlin at the third slot.

The Vulcans completed the league crossover victory by winning five singles matches on Friday. Ganahl shifted to the first position and posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kaylin Gallagher, while Wohar earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Tryanski in her debut at the second slot. Sophomore Emilee Leydig (Windber, Pa./Windber) claimed a 6-7 (8-10), 6-2, 10-4 win at third singles over Galanti. Charlie Gallagher posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Carlin at the fourth position. Freshman Julia McDaniel (South Park, Pa./South Park) dropped a 6-4, 6-0 match to Mullarkey at the fifth slot while making her college debut. Classmate Paige Ott (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) also made her college debut on Friday and registered a 6-4, 6-3 win versus Miller at sixth singles.

Cal U continues its weekend homestand tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 6, when it hosts Millersville at 3 p.m.
