MANSFIELD, Pa. (Sept. 30) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team claimed a 2-0 victory over Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Cal U moves to 2-7-1 overall behind a 2-6-1 mark in conference action. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers fall to 0-8-1 this season, matching their record in the league play.
The Vulcans nearly got on the board at the 5:50-mark when freshman
Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) hit the crossbar before classmate
Carilyn Pasierb (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) shot went wide left of the net. Cal U got on the board in the 10th minute when freshman
Anna Billey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) notched her first career goal from 10 yards out into the right-hand corner of the net. Mansfield looked to level late in the first half, but senior
Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) made the save. The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead into halftime with a 13-6 advantage on shots, in addition to an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U remained on the attack, registering four shots in the opening minutes of the second half. Mansfield attempted to equal the score at the 73:19-mark when Colon came up with another save to maintain the lead. Freshman
Zana Ross (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) led the team with six shots, including back-to-back attempts, late in the second half. The Vulcans added an insurance goal in the 87th minute when Pasierb scored on a rebound off the goalie.
Colon registered a pair of saves in the shutout victory while playing all 90 minutes.
Cal U out-shot Mansfield by a 28-11 margin, recording 17 shots on goal, and finished with a 15-2 edge on corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 4, when they travel to face Mercyhurst in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 4 p.m.
