Cal U posts shutout win at Mercyhurst, 1-0

Austin tallies team-leading third goal of the season; Vulcans earn third shutout victory of the year

ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 4) – The Vulcans registered their second-straight shutout on Wednesday afternoon while earning a 1-0 win at Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 3-7-1 overall with all three wins via shutout. The Vulcans also now stand at 3-6-1 in league play for 10 points in the conference standings. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 2-5-3 this year behind a 2-5-2 mark in PSAC action.

The Vulcans opened the game with a quick shot attempt by freshman Kellie Lynch (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) that went wide of the net just 31 seconds into the contest. Mercyhurst then nearly took an early lead at the 6:37-mark when a shot deflected off the crossbar. The game remained scoreless at the break before the Lakers hit the post in the 54th minute on a shot attempt.

Freshman Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) gave Cal U a 1-0 lead at the 81:24-mark when she placed her shot into the upper left corner of the net following a long pass from senior Kira Carberry (Odenton, Md./Arundel). Austin now leads the team with three goals after no player tallied multiple goals last season. The Lakers looked to answer in the closing minutes before senior goalkeeper Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) posted a pair of saves in the final six-plus minutes.

Colon finished with nine saves in 90 minutes of action for her third shutout of the year.

Mercyhurst out-shot Cal U by an 18-5 margin, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal, while the Vulcans posted a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when it hosts West Chester in PSAC play at 1 p.m.
