CALIFORNIA (Sept. 27) – The Vulcans tied the match early in the second half before allowing two goals in a span of 63 seconds to drop a 3-1 decision versus Gannon on Wednesday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 1-6 this season behind a 1-2 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights move to 5-4-1 overall and remain undefeated in league action at 4-0-1.
Cal U was tested early by the Gannon attack, which unleashed four shots in the opening minutes of the contest. Senior goalkeeper
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) made an exceptional save at the 15:34-mark while shutting down a potential scoring chance. Gannon notched the first goal of the game when freshman Alex Lee Yaw scored on a 30-yard screamer in the bottom left corner of the net. The Golden Knights went into halftime with the 1-0 lead and a 6-0 shot advantage, while Cal U held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.
In the second half, the Vulcans leveled the game in the 49th minute when freshman
Ismael Garcia (Valladolid, Spain/IES Emilio Ferrari) curled the ball into an open net while the goalkeeper was out of position, while fellow freshman
Dylan Repetto (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford) recorded an assist. Cal U appeared to register a second goal just minutes later, but a foul in the box waved off the scoring opportunity. In the 63rd minute, sophomore Mathias Krigbaum reclaimed the lead for Gannon on a ball played through by teammate junior Eduardo de Bonis Encinoso. Just over a minute later, the Golden Knights tallied their third goal on a cross into the box to senior Sergio Kobowane to take a commanding two-goal advantage.
Exner collected two of his five total saves in the second half while playing all 90 minutes in a losing effort.
Gannon out-shot the Vulcans by a 13-3 margin, while Cal U held a convincing 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to action on Sept. 30 when they travel to face No. 9 Millersville in PSAC play at 3:30 p.m.
