GREENSBURG, Pa. – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team registered an early goal by junior
Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) and tallied two more in the second half to get a decisive 3-1 victory at Seton Hill on Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
With the win, the Vulcans move to 1-5 overall and pick up their first conference win of the season to improve to 1-1. Meanwhile, the Griffins drop to 3-4-1 this year behind a 0-3 record in league action.
Cal U took the initial 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when Campbell scorched a header into the goal off a corner kick from teammate junior
Christian Fletcher (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon). Seton Hill attempted to answer just moments later, but a shot from senior Tom Urquhart sailed wide of the net. The Vulcans mounted an attack in the 22nd minute when freshman
Anthony Rack (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) saw his shot just miss the goal. Senior goalkeeper
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) kept the Griffin offense in check, posting three saves in the initial 45 minutes of the match. Cal U went into halftime with the 1-0 advantage, while Seton Hill held a 6-3 shot advantage and a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
In the second half, both teams struggled early to find opportunities as only three shots were taken in the opening 20 minutes. The Vulcans eventually scored again in the 66th minute when freshman
Dylan Repetto (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford) fired a one-timer from the top of the box to register his first collegiate goal, while sophomore
Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) notched the assist. Senior
Nathan Angelo (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) came off the bench in the 75th minute and wasted little time tallying the third goal of the contest at the 77:53-mark off a pass in from Fletcher to collected his second assist. The Griffins broke the shutout in the 86th minute when sophomore John Kenneally scored beating the Cal U defense.
Exner faced 10 total shots in the match and collected five saves while playing all 90 minutes.
Seton Hill finished with a 10-8 shot advantage over the Vulcans, in addition to a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 27, when it hosts Gannon in PSAC action at 4:30 p.m.
