Vulcans snap Kutztown's shutout streak at five games; Jacobson records first collegiate goal

CALIFORNIA (Sept.16) – Facing a team that hadn't yielded a goal all season, the Vulcans suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 3 Kutztown on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team drops to 1-4-1 overall with a 1-3-1 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears improve to 6-0-0 this season behind a 4-0-0 record in league action.

Kutztown controlled the ball for most of the first half, requiring senior goalkeeper Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) to tally 11 saves in the opening 45 minutes. The Golden Bears broke through in the 27th minute when sophomore Maddie Mohr scored off a cross into the box by teammate Anna Hull. Just about nine minutes later, Hull passed another ball into Mohr to bring the lead to 2-0. The Vulcans attempted only one shot in the first half which came from freshman Kellie Lynch (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem), whose chance sailed wide right of the net. Kutztown went into halftime with a sizeable 18-1 shot advantage and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U responded after halftime when freshman Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) fired a free kick passed the Kutztown goalie at the 51:03-mark for her second goal of the season. The goal effectively ended the Golden Bears' five-game shutout streak and put the Vulcans down 2-1. Kutztown answered with back-to-back goals with Mohr accounting for one of them to record the hat trick. About five minutes later, freshman Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) entered the game as the goalkeeper to make her college debut. Cal U notched its second goal of the match when a throw into the box from junior Danielle Koehler (Coal Center, Pa./California) was put in the back of the net by sophomore Holly Jacobson (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) in the 78th minute for her first career goal. Kutztown tallied its fifth goal of the game late in the second half to close out the contest.

Colon finished the contest with a career-high 13 saves in 75 minutes of action, while Sinatra played the final 15 minute of the game and recorded a pair of saves.

The Golden Bears sprayed the net with 11 shots in the second half and closed the game with a 29-3 shot advantage, in addition to a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U closes out its homestand on Friday, Sept. 22, when it hosts three-time, defending-PSAC Champion East Stroudsburg at 4:30 p.m.
