Softball falls to Concord in Florida, 3-0

Fowler, Paige Wilson each collect two hits in the loss; Vulcans rained out against Charleston

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 13) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Concord on Monday afternoon before its contest against defending-Atlantic Region Champion Charleston (W.Va.) was called due to rain.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 5-5 this season with a 3-2 mark at the PFX Spring Games.

Against Concord (10-11), junior center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) and freshman third baseman Paige Wilson (Warren, Pa./Warren) both went 2-for-3, while the rest of the team managed just one hit in the loss.

The Mountain Lions threatened with runners on the corners in the top of the first following a two-out single before a line-out ended the inning. Fowler and Wilson collected back-to-back, two-out singles in the bottom of the inning before Fowler was thrown out at third to end the first. Concord took advantage of a two-base error to start the second by advancing the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt before the runner scored on a passed ball. The Vulcans looked to answer in the bottom of the inning by having a runner on second with one out before the next two batters were retired.

In the fifth, Concord stretched the lead to 2-0 on just two singles before adding to its lead with two outs in the sixth on a solo homer by pitcher Allie Reid.

Senior Portia McBride (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk in 6.0 innings of relief. Reid, who was an All-Mountain East Conference (MEC) selection in 2015 before receiving a medical redshirt last season, tossed a five-hit, complete-game shutout to improve to 5-4 this season.

The Vulcans were in the second inning of their contest against Charleston before the game was called due to rain.

Cal U returns to action in Florida on Wednesday, March 15, when it faces Philadelphia and Indianapolis, starting at 1 p.m.
