Vulcans split run-rule contests in Florida

Fowler collects five RBI, five players post multi-hit games in win over Philadelphia U

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 15) – The Vulcans claimed a split in a pair of run-rule contests on Wednesday at the PFX Spring Games, earning a 10-2 win over Philadelphia before suffering a 13-3 loss to No. 20 Indianapolis.

With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team moves to 6-6 this season behind a 4-3 record while at the PFX Spring Games.

Against Philadelphia U (1-6), junior shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) collected three hits and scored three runs from the leadoff spot. Junior center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) posted two hits and five RBI, while junior second baseman Kaylyn Roose (Akron, Ohio/Revere) and junior left fielder Courtney Sinclair (Oil City, Ontario /Lambton Central) both tallied two hits and two RBI. Freshman third baseman Paige Wilson (Warren, Pa./Warren) added a pair of pair of hits in the victory.

In the bottom of the first, Price led off the inning with a double before scoring on a two-out single by Fowler. The Rams tied the score in the third on an unearned run before taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth on another unearned run.

The Vulcans responded with seven runs on eight hits in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. Sinclair and senior right fielder Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Price followed with an RBI single. Cal U later loaded the bases before Fowler delivered a three-run triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Roose. In her second at-bat of the inning, Sinclair collected a two-run single to stretch the lead to 8-2.

Cal U added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the run-rule victory. Price led off the inning with a double before scoring on a bases-loaded walk by Fowler. Roose followed with a single to cap the win over Philadelphia.

Redshirt freshman Cierra Funke (Hampshire County, W.Va./Hampshire) earned her first career win after scattering two hits over 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Senior starter Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) took a no-decision after yielding two runs (both unearned) on three hits in 3.1 innings.

Against Indianapolis (17-5), the Vulcans used five different pitchers with Davis suffering the loss after allowing four runs (all unearned) in 0.1 inning of work.

The Greyhounds scored two runs in the top of the first before the Vulcans answered with two runs in the third. Sinclair led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before Price followed with an RBI double. Junior Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) then reached on a single before Price scored on a sacrifice fly by Paige Wilson. In the bottom of the inning, Indianapolis erupted for 10 runs (all unearned) off four different pitchers after the leadoff batter reached on an error.

In the fourth, the Greyhounds scored another unearned run before the Vulcans answered with one run in the fifth. Hailey Wilson reached on a one-out single before scoring on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Roose.

The Vulcans close play in Florida tomorrow, Thursday, March 16, when they face No. 24 Wayne State (Mich.) and Nova Southeastern (Fla.), starting at 6 p.m.
