CALIFORNIA (Dec. 30) – In a match-up of teams ranked among the top 15 in the country, the No. 10 Vulcans opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday afternoon with 74-71 win over No. 12 Edinboro at the Convocation Center.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 11-1 overall with a 6-0 mark in league action. The Vulcans are one of two teams still unbeaten in PSAC play, as IUP was forced to postpone its game on Saturday due to weather conditions. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 9-1 this season behind a 5-1 record in conference action.

Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and sophomore
DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) tied for the team lead in scoring with 18 points. Parsons tallied 14 points in the second half with a pair of three-point plays in the final 90 seconds of the game, while Hahn posted 10 points in the opening four-plus minutes of the game. The leading scorer in the PSAC, Parsons added seven rebounds and four blocks in the victory.
Junior
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and five steals in her first start of the season. Classmate
Mia Cushon (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South) registered 14 points, five rebounds and two steals off the bench, while freshman
Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) totaled eight points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes in her first career start.
Edinboro scored the opening two baskets of the game before Cal U mounted a 12-2 run over three-plus minutes to take a 12-7 lead on a three-pointer by Hahn with 5:25 left in the first quarter. The Fighting Scots cut the deficit to 13-12 before the Vulcans responded with a 12-5 rally to stretch the lead to 25-17 at the 8:33-mark of the second quarter following another trey by Hahn. Edinboro countered with 11-unanswered points to take a 28-25 lead with 2:27 left before halftime. The Vulcans snapped a six-minute scoreless span on the next possession and tied the score on a jumper by Jasper with 1:07 remaining in the quarter. Edinboro scored the last four points of the quarter to take a 36-32 lead into halftime.
The teams traded points for the opening three minutes of the third quarter before the Fighting Scots scored six-straight points to take a 46-38 lead at the 5:12-mark. Cal U then worked the deficit down to 50-47 before later scoring eight-unanswered points to take a 55-52 lead on a layup by Cushon with 13 seconds left in the third quarter. The Fighting Scots reclaimed the lead at the 7:15-mark of the fourth quarter before Cushon converted a three-point play with 6:58 left to play. Edinboro scored six of the next eight points to take a 66-64 lead with 5:03 remaining before Cal U seized control of the game with a 10-3 run, including eight points by Parsons, to claim a 74-69 lead with 50 seconds left to play. The Fighting Scots made a pair of free-throws with 39 seconds left before missing a three-pointer and committing a turnover on their last possession of the game.
Cal U finished the game shooting 44.8 percent (30-of-67) from the floor while going just 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from long range. Meanwhile, Edinboro posted a .509 field-goal percentage (28-of-55) from the field. The Vulcans held a 35-31 rebounding advantage and forced 23 turnovers in the victory.
Edinboro senior Ciara Rosten scored a game-high 22 points on 10-of-13 attempts and added seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks before fouling out. Junior Jontay Walton finished with 18 points, while sophomore Michaela Barnes posted 13 points and four rebounds.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 3, when they host Gannon in the Convocation Center at 5:30 p.m.
