CALIFORNIA (Jan. 3) – Senior
Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and junior
Mia Cushon (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South) both recorded 20-point games, as the No. 10 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team earned a 71-53 victory against Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday evening at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 12-1 this season behind a current seven-game game winning streak. Cal U now holds a 7-0 record in league action and remains one of two unbeaten teams in the divisional standings. Meanwhile, Gannon falls to 6-6 overall with a 3-3 mark in league play.
Cushon led all players with a season-high 24 points on 9-of-17 from the floor and six-of-seven from the free-throw line. She also tallied eight rebounds (seven offensive) and two steals while playing 39 minutes. Cushon has posted at least 20 points in three games this season and sits second on the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game.
Parsons scored 23 points and added seven rebounds, five blocks and four steals while playing all 40 minutes on Wednesday. Sophomore
DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) finished with 14 points behind four-of-seven from beyond the arc and junior
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) collected five rebounds, five assists and three steals in the victory.
Cal U opened the game on a dominating 24-6 run after making 10-of-12 attempts from the floor in five-plus minutes with Cushon and Hahn both scoring 11 points during the rally. The teams traded points for the next seven minutes with the Vulcans holding a 30-13 lead after a jumper by Parsons with 7:19 left before halftime. However, Gannon countered with 10-unanswered points to cut the deficit to 30-23 at the 4:57-mark in the second quarter. Cal U responded with seven-straight points to increase the lead to 37-23 on a jumper by Parsons with 1:42 left before the break. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, as the Lady Knights were held without a point for nearly the last five minutes of the first half.
Gannon started the third quarter on an 11-4 run to work the deficit down to 41-34 at the 5:15-mark. Cushon then scored four-straight points to give the Vulcans a 45-34 lead with 2:48 remaining in the quarter. Freshman
Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) later beat the quarter buzzer with a three-pointer from near midcourt to stretch the lead to 52-40. Cal U sealed the victory by scoring eight-straight points early in the fourth quarter to take a commanding 60-42 lead with 5:09 remaining.
The Vulcans shot 60 percent in the first quarter and finished the game with a .413 field-goal percentage (26-of-63). Meanwhile, the Lady Knights made 43.5 percent (20-of-46) from the floor on Wednesday. Cal U registered a 34-31 rebounding advantage behind 16 offensive rebounds and also forced 22 turnovers.
Senior Maggie Mitchell led the Lady Knights with 15 points behind three-of-five from long range. Sophomore Chelsea Rourke finished with 13 points and six rebounds in the losing effort.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6, when it travels to face Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
