Vulcans dealt loss by West Chester, 5-1

Golden Rams register all five goals in first half; Papageorgiou scores first goal of the year

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 7) – The Vulcans suffered a 5-1 loss versus West Chester on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer falls to 1-9 overall with a 1-4 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Golden Rams improve to 8-2-1 this year and remain undefeated in conference play with a 6-0 mark.

West Chester wasted little time scoring the initial goal of the match at the 9:36-mark off a deflected save, as senior Giovanni Mowrey notched an open-net goal. Junior goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) posted three saves in a 10-minute span to keep Cal U within one of the lead. Mowrey would tally a second goal in the contest in the 33rd minute off a cross from teammate junior Jason Pixley. The Golden Rams capitalized on a Vulcan turnover to extend their lead to 3-0 with a goal by junior Nick Jachwak and senior Max Adarkwah registered the assist. West Chester would find the net twice in under two minutes just before the halftime whistle to take a 5-0 lead at the break. West Chester out-shot Cal U by a 10-3 margin in the first half, while Cal U held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U made a substitution at goalie at the 49:21-mark, bringing in sophomore Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) to close off the match. Midway through the second half, Valeriano came up with three saves in a span of seven minutes to keep the Golden Rams scoreless over the final 45 minutes. Cal U avoided the shutout in the 79th minute when junior Anthony Papageorgiou (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bethlehem Catholic) buried a free-kick into the bottom right corner of the net.

Exner and Valeriano both recorded four saves in the match in a combined 90 minutes of play.
