Men's Soccer falls at Shippensburg, 1-0

Raiders notch game-winning goal in the 34th minute; Valeriano makes second start in goal

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 13) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Shippensburg on Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the loss, the Vulcans move to 1-10 on the season behind a 1-5 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Raiders improve to 6-5-2 overall behind a 4-3 record in conference action.

Shippensburg nearly got on the board in the 21st minute when sophomore Colin Marks put a shot on goal off a corner kick, but the attempt was saved by sophomore Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca). Cal U junior Anthony Papageorgiou (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bethlehem Catholic) recorded the first shot on goal for the visiting side, resulting in a save by the goalie. The deadlock was broken in the 34th minute when redshirt freshman Erik Espinoza crossed a ball into the box that was scored by sophomore Isiah Dorsey to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. Junior Josh Hershey (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) registered a shot at the 35:55-mark that was saved by the keeper as the Vulcans looked to level the game. At halftime, both teams collected three shots and Cal U held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

The first shot of the second half happened approximately 25 minutes in when a header by junior Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) sailed wide of the goal. Shippensburg recorded two shots in the final 45 minutes and both chances were off target. The Vulcans looked for an equalizer late but saw four shots blocked by the Raider defense.

Valeriano tallied one save in the losing effort while playing all 90 minutes in his fourth appearance in goal this season.

Cal U held a decisive 10-5 shot advantage over Shippensburg, in addition to a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans continue PSAC play on Sunday, Oct. 15, when they host Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
