Cal U blanked by Slippery Rock, 4-0

Teams combined for six shots in opening half; Valeriano makes consecutive start in goal

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 15) – The Vulcans yielded one goal in the first half before suffering a 4-0 loss to Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 1-11 this year behind a 1-6 mark in league action. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock moves to 4-7-3 overall with a 3-3-2 record in conference play.

The Rock took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Tyler McCarthy notched his first goal of the game after a failed clear attempt by a defender. Cal U nearly tied the score two minutes later when a shot attempt by freshman Eric Ratcliff (Grimes, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) deflected off the crossbar. Slippery Rock entered halftime with a 1-0 lead after the teams combined for six shots in the opening 45 minutes.

Less than five minutes into the second half, McCathery stretched the lead to 2-0 after a cross into the box by George Oakley. McCathery completed the hat trick at the 60:24-mark when he tallied another goal off a feed by Oakley, who also was credited with an assist on the opening goal of the game. The Rock added an insurance goal in the 71st minute when Sean Tinney scored from the right side of the box.

Sophomore Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) collected three saves while playing all 90 minutes. The Rock used three different goalkeepers to record the shutout.

Slippery Rock finished the game with a 14-5 shot advantage after collecting 10 shots in the second half. The Rock also registered a 3-1 edge in corner kicks in the victory.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when it travels to play Pitt-Johnstown at 3:30 p.m.
