Vulcans record win at Pitt-Johnstown, 2-1

Papageorgiou scores game-winner on PK in 54th minute; Valeriano earns first win of the year

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 18) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team snapped a six-game losing streak on Wednesday afternoon, scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in a 2-1 victory at Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 2-11 overall with a 2-6 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats remain winless this year at 0-13-1 behind a 0-9 record in conference action.

UPJ raced out to a quick 1-0 lead in the third minute when D.J. Vogelman scored his third goal of the year. The Vulcans answered just over 10 minutes later when sophomore Mark Wolf (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) recorded his first career goal off a cross by junior Jaheed Loblack (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic) at the 13:09-mark. The score remained tied at 1-1 at the break despite Cal U attempting 16 shots in the first period.

The Vulcans collected three corner kicks in the opening two-plus minutes of the second half before being whistled for offside. Cal U later broke the tie in the 54th minute when senior Anthony Papageorgiou (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bethlehem Catholic (Pa.)) scored on a penalty kick, his second goal of the year.

Cal U controlled play throughout the contest, as it finished with a dominating 23-7 shot advantage and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) earned his first victory of the year, tallying three saves while playing 45 scoreless minutes in the second half.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 21, when they host Bloomsburg on Senior Day at 3 p.m.
