CALIFORNIA (Oct. 21) – The Vulcans suffered a 3-2 loss against Bloomsburg on Senior Day with all five goals occurring in the second half on Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 2-12 on the season behind a 2-7 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Huskies move to 3-11 overall and claim their first conference win this year with a 1-9 record.
Senior goalkeeper
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) ended a scoring chance by deflecting the ball over the crossbar in the opening minutes of the match. The Vulcans registered three shots in an 11 minute-span, but were unable to find the back of the net. Late in the first half, junior
Christian Fletcher (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) saw his attempt saved by Bloomsburg goalie to keep the contest scoreless heading into the break. Both teams registered seven shots in the first half and the Huskies held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Bloomsburg notched the initial goal of the match in the 48th minute when Anthony Cerda scored off the right post on a cross from teammate Mike Bazadona. Just four minutes later, the Huskies extended their lead on a shot by Bazadona which took a deflection into the net. Sophomore
Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) entered the contest at the 52:01-mark following an injury to Exner. Cal U then cut the deficit on a goal by sophomore
Cooper Amos (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) in the 63rd minute, his first of the season, with an assist awarded to junior
Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek). The Huskies tallied their third goal just 68 seconds later to retake a two-goal advantage, 3-1. Campbell notched his team-leading fourth goal on a header off a free kick sent into the box by freshman
Ismael Garcia (Valladolid, Spain/IES Emilio Ferrari) at the 69:24-mark of the second half. The Vulcans registered a corner kick in the final minutes of the contest that was ultimately cleared by the Bloomsburg defense.
Exner and Valeriano each posted two saves in a combined 90 minutes of play.
The Huskies edged the Vulcans by a 16-14 shot margin, in addition to a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 25, when it travels to face Mercyhurst in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 3:30 p.m.
