ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 25) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at Gannon after allowing two first-half goals on Wednesday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-11-2 this season behind a 3-10-2 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights improve to 11-3-2 overall and currently sit fifth in the conference with a 10-3-2 record.
Gannon registered the first shot in the 13th minute, which cruised wide of the goal, before firing back-to-back shots that just missed the net. Kayla Bevacqua notched the initial goal of the match at the 28:23-mark with assists awarded to Hannah Manczka and Taylor Lewis. Senior
Daniela Dell'Aquila (Toronto, Ontario/St. Elizabeth Catholic) record the team's only shot on goal in the 31st minute which was saved by the keeper. In the 34th minute, the Lady Knights scored on a breakaway goal by Hannah Hays with the ball sneaking under the goalie extending their lead. Gannon went into the break with a 2-0 lead and a sizeable 14-2 shot advantage.
Freshman
Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) notched a shot early in the second half that sailed just over the crossbar in the 52nd minute. The Lady Knights added an insurance goal at the 70:33-mark on a header by Megan McCartney into the top right corner of the net off a free kick Manczka. The Vulcans attack was unable to manage another shot in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper
Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) finished the contest with 11 saves after posting eight stops in the second half while playing all 90 minutes. She has now registered 104 saves to become the fifth different goalie in recent program history to break the century mark in a single season. Colon has registered double-digit saves four times this season in 16 starts.
Gannon out-shot Cal U by a 27-3 margin, including 14 shots on goal, in the match and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans conclude the season on Saturday, Oct. 28, when they travel to face Lock Haven in PSAC action at 5:30 p.m.
