• Cal U trailed 12-10 at halftime and forced four turnovers last Saturday before suffering a 26-10 loss at IUP in the ninth-annual Coal Bowl. The Crimson Hawks held a 12-0 lead after the first quarter before senior
Michael Keir found classmate
Tom Greene for an eight-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. The Vulcans added a field goal in the final minute of the first half before the Crimson Hawks scored 14 points in the third quarter. Senior
Corey Bopp set a career high with 12 tackles and sophomore
Lamont McPhatter II added 10 stops, 2.0 TFL, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
• The Vulcans lead the all-time series that started in 1923 by a 46-38-3 margin. Cal U has won the last 12 meetings against Clarion, who hasn't won at Adamson Stadium since 2000.
• A former All-American quarterback for the Golden Eagles,
Chris Weibel is in his third year as head coach at his alma mater. He previously served 11 years as an assistant coach at Clarion, serving as the offensive coordinator in 2013-14. Weibel, who holds the school's all-time records for passing yards and touchdowns, helped guide Clarion to an 11-3 record in 1996 after advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Playoffs.
• Despite earning its first win of the year last week, Clarion ranks last in the PSAC in both scoring offense (13.5 points/game) and total offense (286.8 yards/game). Junior transfer quarterback
Asiantii Woulard finished with a career-high 267 passing yards and two touchdowns in the win over Seton Hill last week. He has completed less than 40 percent of his passes this year after previously attending UCLA and USF. Freshman
Mason Standard paces the team with 17 receptions and four touchdowns, while sophomore
Greg Leonard has 274 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior
Kyle Evans and freshman
Mylique McGriff have combined for almost 550 rushing yards, while the Golden Eagles rank last in the PSAC with just one rushing touchdown in six games. Clarion sits in bottom third of the 16-team league in most defensive categories, allowing 31.6 points and 424.8 total yards per game. Junior linebacker
Layne Skundrich ranks fifth in the PSAC with 57 tackles after tallying 85 stops last year. Sophomore defensive back
Sam Fareri recorded both an interception and a forced fumble against Seton Hill and has made an interception in consecutive games. On special teams, sophomore
James Metzgar paces the PSAC with 42 punts this year and has placed 14 inside the opponents' 20-yard line. He also has made six-of-nine field goals with a long of 38 yards. Evans has combined for over 400 return yards while serving as the team's primary return specialist.
• Senior wide receiver
Luke Smorey leads the team with 107.2 all-purpose yards per game this season. He sits second on the team with 422 receiving yards on a career-high 36 catches and has totaled 205 yards on eight kickoff returns over two-plus games. Smorey also has recorded four punts this year with a long of 49 yards while tallying a blocked punt against Seton Hill last month.
• The Vulcans enter the weekend having lost back-to-back games and are looking to avoid their first three-game losing streak in the same year since the 2003 season. Cal U also hasn't lost three-straight games in divisional play since 2002 and boasts a 22-8 record in games following a loss since 2005. The Vulcans rallied off 15-consecutive wins following the last time they lost back-to-back games in 2015.
• Junior
Jimmy Wheeler has led the team in rushing in each of the last two weeks, totaling 136 yards on 28 attempts with a pair of touchdowns. In his career, he boasts an average of 5.7 yards per carry and eight rushing touchdowns. Wheeler also totaled 84 yards on three kickoff returns last week at IUP with a long of 48 yards. In the spring of 2016, he was the leadoff leg on the 4x100-meter relay that won the PSAC Championship.
• The Vulcans recorded a pair of blocked PAT attempts in the first quarter last week at IUP and have now blocked at least one kick in four-straight games. It marks the first time in recent program history in which Cal U has blocked multiple PAT attempts in a game. The Vulcans have blocked multiple kicks in a game 10 times since the 2011 season with the last coming in the 2016 NCAA Playoffs - also versus the Crimson Hawks.
• The Vulcans host Clarion for Homecoming this weekend for the third time in five years. Cal U has won each of its last 12 Homecoming contests, including a 35-14 victory against Gannon last season. The Vulcans last suffered a loss on Homecoming in 2004 to Shippensburg, which featured future NFL Pro Bowlers in Brent Grimes and John Kuhn.
• Sophomore defensive back
Lamont McPhatter II forced and recovered a fumble last week at IUP after making an interception in four-consecutive games. He is now tied for second in the PSAC this season with five takeaways (interceptions, fumble recoveries). McPhatter ranks second on the team with 41 tackles (26 solo) and has made at least five stops in five-straight games, tallying a season-high 10 tackles twice.
• Through six games this season, the Vulcans have started the same five players at the same position on the offensive line. Senior
Taylor Nikithser has started 29-straight games at center and is tied for second on the team with 31 career starts. Sophomore
Craig McCorkle has started 17 games at right tackle in his career, while senior
Austin Jacobs has made nine starts at right guard over the last two years.
• Senior wide receiver
Tom Greene eclipsed the 100-yard mark last week for the fourth time this season. Outside of all-time leading receiver
Garry Brown, he is the first player to record three-consecutive 100-yard games since
Trey Johnson accomplished the feat in 2012. Greene ranks sixth in the PSAC this year with 607 receiving yards, including 368 yards over the last three games, while sitting third in the league with 39 receptions.
• Last week, senior linebacker
Corey Bopp set a career high with 12 tackles at IUP after his previous career high of 11 was also set against the Crimson Hawks in 2015. He has tallied 31 stops this season after posting 13 tackles as a reserve last year. Bopp leads the team with 3.0 sacks after tallying 1.5 sacks at both Millersville and Slippery Rock. The North Hills product is within reach of his career high of 56 tackles set as a sophomore.
• Cal U forced four turnovers at IUP last week after the Crimson Hawks entered the game with just four turnovers over the previous five games. The Vulcans have already forced four turnovers in a game three times this year and boast a plus-five turnover margin. Last year, Cal U recorded four turnovers in a game once and finished the season with a plus-seven turnover margin.
• Over the last two weeks, redshirt freshman wide receiver
Tyson Hill has made a combined five receptions for 114 yards with three catches going for at least 20 yards. He caught a 49-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter at Slippery Rock two weeks ago before making four receptions for 65 yards at IUP. Hill's father, Troy, was a captain at Pitt in 1983 and his brother, Troy, Jr., was a tight end at Ohio from 2010-13.
• Senior
Michael Keir set a career high with six punts last week at IUP and averaged 37.2 yards per punt. He became the first player with three punts placed inside the opponents' 20-yard line - all in the first half - since
Andrew Cerett accomplished the feat three times during the 2014 season. Keir forced the Crimson Hawks to start back-to-back drives at their own 2-yard line.
