Women's Basketball tops West Chester, 107-73

Cal U reaches century mark for second time this season, scores 30-plus points in two quarters

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Jan. 6) – Behind nearly 70 points by the trio of junior Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley), senior Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) and junior Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), the No. 8 Vulcans recorded a 107-73 victory at West Chester on Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 13-1 overall behind a 7-1 mark in league play. The Vulcans have now scored over 100 points in a game twice this season, as they scored 114 points in a win at West Virginia State on Nov. 16. Meanwhile, the Golden Rams fall to 4-8 this season with a 4-4 record in conference action.

Glenn scored a season-high 32 points (18 first half) after going 11-of-18 from the floor behind a career-high four three-pointers. She also collected eight assists, three rebounds and three steals while playing 38 minutes at West Chester. Glenn, who made four-of-six from beyond the arc on Friday, has scored at least 30 points six times in her career.

Barrett nearly recorded a triple double against the Golden Rams, finishing with 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. She shot 9-of-13 from the floor while playing 35 minutes in the victory. Parsons scored 18 points on seven-of-nine shooting and added three rebounds and five assists.

Senior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) scored 12 points, while classmate Lana Doran (Northamptonshire, England/Barking Abbey) posted 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) finished with nine points, three assists and three steals off the bench.

The Vulcans opened the game on a 9-2 run before the teams traded points for the next two-plus minutes with Cal U holding a 17-13 lead with 5:04 left in the first quarter. The Vulcans then scored six-straight points to take a double-digit lead at 23-13 on a three-pointer by Glenn at the 4:24-mark.  Cal U scored five-consecutive points late in the first quarter before taking a 35-21 lead at the end of the quarter. The Vulcans maintained a double-digit lead for the opening half of the second quarter before the Golden Rams mounted a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 48-39 with 1:34 remaining before halftime. Cal U made a pair of layups in the final 30-plus seconds before the break to take a 55-42 lead after two quarters.

The teams traded points in the initial minutes of the third quarter before Cal U rallied off 10-straight points – all by Barrett and Parsons – in just 99 seconds to take a 75-53 lead with 4:15 left in the quarter. The Vulcans later mounted a 9-0 rally to stretch their lead to 91-59 with 8:30 remaining in the game. Cal U eventually led by as many as 36 points, 107-71, with 35 seconds left, as Martin capped a 12-2 run with a layup.

The Vulcans finished the game with a season-high .583 field-goal percentage (42-of-72), including a 72.7 clip (8-of-11) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Golden Rams made 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field and 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from long range. West Chester held a 37-31 rebounding advantage in the loss, while Cal U collected 32 assists on 42 field goals and forced 27 turnovers.

Senior Tori Smick paced four players scoring in double-digits for the Golden Rams, finishing with 16 points and eight rebounds. Junior Madison Torresin added 15 points and seven rebounds in the losing effort.

Cal U returns to PSAC West play on Monday, Jan. 9, when it hosts Slippery Rock in the Convocation Center at 5:30 p.m.
