CALIFORNIA (Jan. 9) – Senior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) and junior
Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) combined for 48 points on Monday night, as the No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team rolled to a 96-65 win over Slippery Rock at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 14-1 this season with an 8-1 mark in league action. Cal U is now tied with Mercyhurst for third place in the PSAC West standings, as Edinboro and IUP remain unbeaten in conference play this season. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 7-8 overall behind a 4-5 mark in league action.
Glenn scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor and six-of-nine from the free-throw line. She also tallied nine rebounds (four offensive), seven assists and six steals in 37 minutes on Monday. Glenn, who was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week earlier on Monday, has averaged 29.7 points over the last three games.
Parsons finished with 20 points on 9-of-15 attempts and added five rebounds and two steals in 27 minutes. Junior
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) added 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals before being issued her second technical foul with 2:34 left in the third quarter. Sophomore
Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) also scored 13 points behind four three-pointers off the bench, while classmate
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) posted nine points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals.
The Rock held a lead midway through the first quarter before the Vulcans answered with 10-straight points to take a 24-15 lead on a jumper by senior
Brittany Nelson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) with 1:19 left in the quarter. The teams traded points for nearly four minutes before Cal U rallied off a 15-2 run to stretch its lead to 45-24 with 2:32 remaining before halftime. During the run, The Rock committed eight turnovers and made only one field goal. The Vulcans eventually took a 49-32 lead at the break.
In the latter half of the third quarter, Cal U mounted a 16-4 run with Glenn and Parsons combining for 14 points over five-plus minutes to take a 62-44 lead with 46 seconds left in the quarter. The Vulcans scored 10-straight points in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 36 points, 96-60, when Suckling hit her fourth three-pointer in a span of seven-plus minutes before earning the 96-65 victory.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 42.7 percent (38-of-89) from the floor, including 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from beyond the arc in the second half. Meanwhile, The Rock shot at a 44.8 clip (26-of-58) from the field in the loss. Cal U finished with a 48-43 rebounding advantage and forced 32 turnovers, which were converted into 44 points.
Junior C.C. Dixon and sophomore Mallory Heinle both led Slippery Rock with 13 points on Monday. Senior Cassidy Wright added 11 points and four assists in the loss.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11, when they travel to face Pitt-Johnstown at 5:30 p.m.
