CALIFORNIA (Jan. 28) – The No. 5 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team claimed sole possession of first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West standings on Saturday afternoon with a 75-71 victory against Edinboro at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 19-1 overall behind a 13-1 mark in conference play. Cal U also became the first team in the league to clinch a berth in the PSAC Tournament. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 17-4 this season with a 13-2 record in conference play.
Junior forward
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp.,Pa./Central Valley) recorded her second double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points and a season-high 11 rebounds in the win. She also posted four assists and two steals while playing 39 minutes.
Senior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) led the team in scoring with 20 points after going 13-of-13 from the free-throw line. She also tallied five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 40 minutes. Junior
Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added 14 points (all in the second half) and eight rebounds, while senior
Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished with 10 points off the bench.
Cal U jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the 6:43-mark after Glenn scored the opening eight points of the contest. The Fighting Scots answered with five-straight points before the teams traded baskets over the last four minutes of the quarter with the Vulcans holding a 14-11 lead. Edinboro made five-of-six from the floor to start the second quarter and took its first lead at 22-20 with 5:07 left in the first half. The Vulcans responded to take a 24-23 lead with back-to-back baskets from Barrett and sophomore
Morgan Jennings (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg). However, the Fighting Scots reeled off the final eight points of the second quarter to take a 31-24 lead at the break.
The Vulcans responded with an 8-2 run to open the third quarter to pull within 33-32 at the 7:02 mark. A jumper from Martin at the 6:23-mark began a run of eight-unanswered points for Cal U before the Vulcans extended their lead out to 52-44 with 1:43 left in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets over the initial three minutes of the fourth quarter before the Fighting Scots mounted a 7-1 run to pull within 62-61 with 4:48 remaining. Edinboro was unable to get within one point again, as Cal U shot three-of-five from the field and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line to preserve the victory.
Cal U made 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field after shooting at a 53.8 clip in the second half. In comparison, Edinboro shot 41.3 percent (25-of-61) from the field while going three-of-nine from three-point territory. The Fighting Scots held a slight 36-35 rebounding advantage and scored 24 bench points.
Senior Katie Fischer led all scorers with 23 points after shooting 9-of-18 from the field and added a game-high five assists. Junior Ciara Rosten added 18 points, five rebounds and two blocks in the loss.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 1, when they travel to face Slippery Rock at 5:30 p.m.
