SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Feb. 1) – The No. 4 Vulcans extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 79-55 victory at Slippery Rock on Wednesday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 21-1 overall behind a 15-1 mark in league play. The Vulcans now hold a 1.5-game lead in the PSAC West standings, as Edinboro was idle on Wednesday. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 9-13 this season with a 6-10 record in conference action.
Senior
Lana Doran (Northamptonshire, England/Barking Abbey) paced four players scoring in double-digits with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the floor. She nearly recorded her third 20-point game of the season after scoring a combined 15 points over the previous three games. Doran is averaging 9.7 points per game and has started all 22 games this year after missing all of last season due to injury.

Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) finished with 16 points after going 8-of-13 from the floor and added seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and five steals. Senior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) tallied 11 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals, while classmate
Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) scored 11 points off the bench on Wednesday. Junior
Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) tied for the team lead with eight rebounds (four offensive) and also collected two blocks and three steals while playing 21 minutes.
The Vulcans scored the opening six points of the game before The Rock countered with seven-unanswered points in just over 90 seconds to take a 7-6 lead with 7:04 left in the first quarter. Cal U responded by mounting a 13-2 run over nearly six minutes to take a 19-9 lead on a jumper by Doran with 1:08 remaining in the opening quarter. During that span, Slippery Rock was limited to just one-of-eight shooting from the floor and committed four turnovers. The Vulcans held a 19-11 lead at the end of the quarter before the teams traded points in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Cal U then registered a 13-2 rally after holding Slippery Rock to only one-of-nine from the field to take a 38-19 lead with 2:49 left before halftime. The Vulcans eventually took a 40-24 lead at the break after scoring 18 points from inside the paint and forcing The Rock into 13 turnovers.
Cal U tallied eight of the initial 10 points in the second half to stretch its lead to 50-26 on a jumper by Barrett with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter. The Vulcans later scored six-straight points to take a 58-31 lead on a pair of free-throws by Doran at the 1:54-mark before holding a 60-35 lead at the end of the quarter. Cal U held Slippery Rock without a field goal for nearly three minutes to start the fourth quarter, stretching its lead to 65-35 before The Rock made a basket with 7:18 left in the game. Slippery Rock managed to cut the deficit to 24 points twice in the final 90 seconds before suffering a 79-55 loss.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 40.3 percent (31-of-77) from the floor and 85.7 percent (12-of-14) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, The Rock made 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the charity stripe. Cal U held a 45-39 rebounding advantage behind 21 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points. The Vulcans also forced 24 turnovers in the victory.
Slippery Rock was without the leading scorer in the PSAC in senior Lexi Caprenter, who also missed the previous meeting against the Vulcans on Jan. 9. Junior C.C. Dixon led the team with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting and added eight rebounds, while freshman Brooke Hinderliter tallied seven points and collected a game-high 10 rebounds (six offensive).
Cal U is idle for a week before returning to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8, when it hosts Gannon at the Convocation Center with tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
