Softball extends win streak in Florida

Vulcans post run-rule victory, Finley delivers go-ahead RBI in the seventh versus Felician

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 9) – The No. 14 California University of Pennsylvania softball team extended its win streak to 11 games on Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0 run-rule victory over Lake Superior State (Mich.) and a 2-1 win against Felician (N.J.) at the NTC Spring Games.

With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 11-1 overall this year. Cal U has out-scored its eight opponents in Florida by a 48-8 margin while playing teams from six different conferences.

Against Lake Superior State, Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before scoring four runs with two outs in the second. With runners on first and second, junior right fielder Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) lined an RBI single before sophomore shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) followed with a two-run double. Senior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) later extended the lead with an RBI double, 5-0.

The Vulcans batted around in the fourth and scored four runs to stretch their lead to 9-0. Following a leadoff single, freshman left fielder Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) belted a two-run homer, her second of the year, before Price later collected an RBI single. Cal U scored its final run of the game when sophomore center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the inning.

Finley finished 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored while batting leadoff. Price went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while junior catcher Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) collected two hits and scored twice.

Senior Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) earned the complete-game victory to improve to 5-1 this season. She scattered three hits and issued no walks over 5.0 innings, while matching her season high of nine strikeouts.

Against Felician, Finley delivered the go-ahead, RBI single with two outs in the top of the seventh to lift the Vulcans to a 2-1 victory. The Vulcans were limited to just four hits in the win while facing the Golden Falcons for the second time this season (Feb. 20).

Senior Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) tossed the complete-game shutout and allowed one run (unearned) on four hits and one walk over 7.0 innings. She also registered seven strikeouts and held Felician without an extra-base hit.

The Golden Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after a two-out error allowed a runner to score from first. Cal U tied the score in the fourth with a solo homer by Smarra, her third of the year. Uher forced Felician to strand a runner at third in the bottom of the fifth before retiring the Golden Falcons in order in the sixth.

In the seventh, the Vulcans had runners on first and second with two outs before Finley delivered the go-ahead single. Felician had the game-tying run on second in the bottom of the inning before Uher recorded a strikeout and ground-out to end the game.

Cal U closes out play at the NTC Spring Games tomorrow, Thursday, March 10, when it faces Northern State (S.D.) and Lees-McRae (N.C.) starting at 1 p.m.
