Vulcans record two shutouts in Florida

Cal U allows a combined four hits, closes trip with a 10-0 record at NTC Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 10) – The Vulcans finished play at the NTC Spring Games with an undefeated record after posting a 2-0 win over Northern State (S.D.) and a 9-0 run-rule victory against Lees-McRae (N.C.) on Thursday afternoon.

With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 13-1 overall behind a 10-0 mark while on its spring trip to Florida.

Against Northern State, the Vulcans scored the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the first. Sophomore shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) reached on a double before senior first baseman Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) followed with a walk. Senior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) and sophomore center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) then delivered back-to-back RBI singles.

Senior Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout to improve to 6-1 this season. She forced the Wolves to strand runners in scoring position in three innings and recorded eight strikeouts while recording her 25th career shutout.

Fowler and Price each collected two hits, as the Vulcans totaled six hits in the win.

Against Lees-McRae, Cal U forced the run-rule victory by scoring four runs in the fourth and five runs in the sixth. In the top of the fourth, Smarra drew a leadoff walk before Fowler reached on a fielding error. Freshman designated player Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) then delivered a two-run triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly. Junior catcher Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) drew a two-out walk before Price later posted an RBI double.

The Vulcans left the bases loaded in the fourth before adding five runs in the fifth after sending 10 batters to the plate. Junior right fielder Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) started the inning with a single and later scored on a bases-loaded groundout. Fowler and sophomore first baseman Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) recorded back-to-back RBI singles before Fowler scored on a sacrifice fly. Jahoda followed with an RBI double to cap the scoring.

Robblee finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored, while Finley and Price both collected two hits and scored once. Senior second baseman Erica Vallecorsa (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) registered a pair of RBI, each on a sacrifice fly, and Wilson added two hits in the win.

Senior starter Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) and Robblee combined for the shutout with each working 3.0 innings. Uher scattered two hits and three walks, while Robblee retired all nine batters she faced with four via strikeout to earn the victory.

The Vulcans are idle for over a week before returning to action on March 19 with a home doubleheader against Clarion at 2 p.m.
