Cal U claims two wins at NTC Spring Games

Reicoff ties all-time school record for homers, goes a combined 6-for-8 with six RBI and four runs

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 7) – Senior Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) tied the all-time school record for home runs on Monday afternoon and the No. 15 Vulcans remained unbeaten at the NTC Spring Games following a 9-2 win over Saint Joseph's (Ind.) and a 3-0 victory against Southwest Minnesota State.

With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 9-1 this season.

Reicoff belted a pair of homers against Southwest Minnesota State to move into a tie with former All-American Jillian Russell for first place in school history with 47 career homers. She now sits fifth in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) history in career homers and figures to become only the fourth player in league history, and the first since 2009, to reach the 50-homer milestone. Reicoff has posted at least 10 homers in each of the previous three years and set the single-season school record with 19 homers in 2015.

Against Southwest Minnesota State, the Vulcans took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Reicoff. Cal U added to its lead in the fifth with a solo homer by Reicoff, her fifth of the year.

Freshman Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) scattered just three hits and one walk over 7.0 innings for the first complete-game shutout of her career. She prevented the Mustangs from advancing a runner into scoring position until the sixth inning and also recorded five strikeouts. Southwest Minnesota State starter Shelby Crank suffered the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits and two walks in 7.0 innings.

Against Saint Joseph's, Cal U raced out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on back-to-back RBI doubles by senior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) and sophomore center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) followed by an RBI single from sophomore designated player Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy). The Vulcans added to the lead in the fourth by scoring four runs on four singles and two walks. The first three batters in the inning reached base before junior Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) drew a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk. Later in the inning, Reicoff collected a two-run single and Smarra followed with an RBI single, 7-0.

The Pumas rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth and left the bases loaded in the sixth before the Vulcans answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Reicoff lined an RBI triple before scoring on a ground-out by Smarra to give Cal U a 9-2 lead.

Reicoff finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Smarra went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Wilson collected three hits and one RBI and sophomore shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) added a pair of hits and one run scored.

Senior starter Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) improved to 4-1 this season after allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits and three walks in 4.2 innings. Classmate Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) registered the save after entering the game with the bases loaded and tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Saint Joseph's starter Jordan Schneider suffered the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on four hits while lasting just 1.0 inning.

Cal U returns to action at the NTC Spring Games on Wednesday, March 9, when it faces Felician (N.J.) and Lake Superior State (Mich.), starting at 3 p.m.
