Vulcans earn two wins at NTC Games

Fowler belts walk-off grand slam vs Wayne State, pitchers allow three hits to Northern State

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 6) – The No. 15 California University of Pennsylvania softball team claimed a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon at the NTC Spring Games, winning 6-5 over Wayne State (Neb.) on a walk-off grand slam by sophomore center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) and 4-0 against Northern State (S.D.).

With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 while in the Sunshine State. Since losing its season-opener, Cal U has out-scored its opponents by a 58-12 margin while moutning a seven-game winning streak.

Wayne State scored a pair of insurance runs with two outs in the top of the seventh before Cal U countered with the walk-off grand slam by Fowler. Sophomore right fielder Courtney Sinclair (Oil City, Ontario/Lambton Central) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by sophomore shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland). Following a strikeout, senior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) reached on a single to load the bases. Fowler then delivered her second career grand slam to give the Vulcans a 6-5 victory.

Smarra went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and two runs scored, while sophomore designated player Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) added a pair of singles.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first before the Vulcans answered in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer by Smarra. Wayne State tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth on a two-out double before taking the lead in the sixth on a passed ball.

Senior Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar), who tossed the first 2.0 innings, earned the win after recording the final two outs in the top of the seventh. Classmate Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) allowed three runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings of relief against the Wildcats. Wayne State starter Cassy Miller suffered the loss after yielding six runs (all earned) on eight hits and four walks over 6.1 innings.

Against Northern State, the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single by Fowler. Cal U then stranded runners in each of the next three innings before scoring three runs in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman second baseman Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) led off the inning with a single and later scored from second on a pinch-hit double by freshman Emilee Downing (Groveport, Ohio/Groveport Madison). Sophomore Alissa Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville) followed with a pinch-hit single before Price delivered a two-run double.

Junior Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) earned the victory after tossing 6.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits and one walk while tallying seven strikeouts. Sagl entered the circle in the seventh following a leadoff walk and retired the final three outs of the game. Northern State starter Rachel Albright was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits and six walks.

Robblee went 3-for-4 with one run scored, as she raised her team-leading batting average to .588 (10-of-17).
