CLERMONT, Fla. (March 5) – The Vulcans opened play at the NTC Spring Games in Florida on Saturday with a 10-0 run-rule victory against Stonehill (Mass.) and a 5-0 win over Southern Indiana.
With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 5-1 overall after being idle the past two weeks.
Against Stonehill, senior
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout to improve to 2-1 this year. She registered six strikeouts, while not issuing a walk over 5.0 innings.
The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out error before scoring four runs in the third. Sophomore shortstop
Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) led off the third with a single before scoring on a two-out RBI single by sophomore center fielder
Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing). Following a walk, freshman left fielder
Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) belted a three-run homer.
In the fourth, Cal U batted around and scored five runs on four hits and two walks. Senior first baseman
Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) posted a two-run double before Robblee later collected a two-run single with two outs.
Robblee finished 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, five RBI and two runs scored. Price posted a pair of hits and scored twice, while sophomore designated player
Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) also scored twice.
Against Southern Indiana, senior
Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) scattered two hits and tallied five strikeouts over 7.0 shutout innings.
Fowler led off the top of the second with a solo homer before the Vulcans added to their lead in the third with a leadoff homer by Reicoff. In the fifth, Wilson lined an RBI double before scoring on a sacrifice fly, as Cal U stretched its lead to 5-0.
Fowler finished 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored, while Reicoff and Wilson each posted two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Senior right fielder
Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) collected two singles and one walk in the victory.
Cal U continues play at the NTC Spring Games tomorrow, Sunday, March 6, with games against Wayne State (Neb.) and Northern State (S.D.).
