Reicoff sets HR record in sweep at Mercyhurst

Vulcans extend win streak to 17 games with doubleheader sweep

ERIE, Pa. (March 26) – Senior first baseman Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) became the school's all-time home run leader on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 13 Vulcans extended their winning streak to 17 games with a doubleheader sweep at Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, posting a pair of 8-4 victories.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 17-1 this season with a 4-0 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 7-7 overall while playing their first divisional games of the year.

Reicoff entered play tied with former All-American shortstop Jillian Russell (2009-12) for first place in school history with 47 homers. She broke the all-time record with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning in Game 1. Reicoff ranks third among active NCAA Division II players with 48 career homers and is also now tied with Ashley Fitzgerald (2006-09) of Kutztown for fourth place all-time in PSAC history.

In Game 1, the Vulcans scored two runs in each of the first three innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Following the two-run homer by Reicoff in the first, Cal U scored on a wild pitch and a two-out RBI single by junior right fielder Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) in the second.  In the third, the Vulcans mounted a two-out rally to load the bases before junior catcher Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) delivered a two-run single through the middle.

Cal U added to the lead in the fourth with back-to-back doubles with senior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) driving in Reicoff, 5-0. The Lakers scored on a two-out double in the sixth before the Vulcans countered with a run in the seventh following a two-out error. In the bottom of the seventh, Mercyhurst scored three runs to cut the deficit to 8-4.

Sophomore designated player Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Reicoff finished 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and two runs scored. Freshman left fielder Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue) also scored twice in the victory.

Senior Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) earned the victory to improve to 8-1 this year. She scattered four hits and allowed one run (earned) while striking out a season-high 10 in 6.0 innings. Mercyhurst starter Heather Nye (2-3) suffered the loss after yielding four runs (all earned) on four hits and one walk in 2.0 innings of work.

In Game 2, the Vulcans raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with a bases-loaded ground-out and two-run single by Wilson. Mercyhurst answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer by center fielder Rachel DiBartolomeo. Cal U collected back-to-back doubles by sophomore center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) and Wilson in the third to increase the lead to 4-1.

Reicoff registered a two-out RBI single in the fourth before the Vulcans tallied three runs in the fifth. Fowler led off the inning with a double before scoring on a single by Wilson. Following a walk and sacrifice bunt, Wilson scored on a ground-out before Finley delivered a two-out RBI single. In the bottom of the fifth, DiBartolomeo belted a solo homer to cut the deficit to 8-3. The Lakers later scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Wilson helped pace the offense by going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored. Finley also collected three hits, while the trio of Fowler, sophomore shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) and Reicoff each posted two hits and scored a combined four runs.

Senior Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) earned the complete-game victory to improve to 4-0 this season. She allowed four runs (all earned) on six hits and three walks in 7.0 innings with five strikeouts. Mercyhurst junior Anna Cochis (3-2) was saddled with the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (all earned) on 12 hits and two walks in 4.2 innings.

The Vulcans return to action on Friday, April 1, when they play a home-opening doubleheader against Edinboro at 2:30 p.m.
