Cal U sweeps home opener with Edinboro

Fighting Scots commit a combined eight errors, Sagl records 13 strikeouts in two-hit CG shutout

CALIFORNIA (April 1) – In their first home action of the season, the No. 13 Vulcans extended their winning streak to 19 games by posting a doubleheader sweep of Edinboro at Lilley Field on Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, winning 8-0 and 3-1.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improve to 19-1 overall and with a 6-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 7-11 this season with a 2-4 mark in divisional games.

In Game 1, junior catcher Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) laced a two-out, two-run double to the right center gap in the bottom of the second. The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) led off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a single by senior first baseman Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley). Price then scored on a throwing error by the Edinboro catcher on an attempted stolen base by Reicoff, who later scored on a single through the right side from sophomore center fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing). After a pitching change by the Fighting Scots, sophomore designated player Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) homered to left field on a 2-2 count to stretch the lead to 6-0. The Vulcans later pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to capture the 8-0 run-rule victory.

Senior Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) won her ninth-straight start to improve to 9-1 this season, yielding only two hits in 6.0 innings (106 pitches) while striking out a season-high 13 (seven looking). Edinboro freshman Carley Nasca (3-4) suffered the loss after surrendering five runs (all earned) on four hits and four walks in 4.1 innings (88 pitches).

In Game 2, the Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a solo homer from left fielder Brooke Callaghan. Cal U tied the score in the third with a solo homer by freshman left fielder Taylor Robblee (Woodstock, Ontario/College Avenue). The score remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Price led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Reicoff. Senior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKeesport, Pa./Sto-Rox) drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases with no outs. Price then scored on a sacrifice fly before a fielding error allowed Reicoff to score an insurance run, 3-1.

Senior Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) improved to 5-0 on the year, allowing one run and scattering six hits in 7.0 innings (93 pitches). Edinboro sophomore Kerri Stevens (2-3) suffered the loss after yielding three runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks over 6.0 innings (90 pitches).

Cal U continues its weekend homestand at Lilley Field with a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, April 2, against Gannon at 1 p.m.
