Brown tabbed an AFCA First-Team All-American

WACO, Texas (Dec. 7) – After recording one of the most prolific seasons in the country, California University of Pennsylvania senior wide receiver Garry Brown (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South) was named an America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) First-Team All-American on Wednesday morning.

Brown becomes the eighth player in Cal U history to be selected AFCA All-American and the first since 2012. This marks the first year in which the organization recognized two All-America teams, as previously only 25 players from across NCAA Division II were honored by the AFCA.

A native of Ohio, Brown set single-season school records with 22 receiving touchdowns and 1,475 receiving yards on 91 catches. He finished second in the country in receiving touchdowns, while leading NCAA Division II with 26 total touchdowns (two punt return, one rushing, one return). Brown paced wide receivers at all NCAA levels in scoring this year at 13.0 points per game. The 6-foot-1 senior also ranked fourth in the country with 184.92 all-purpose yards per game after totaling almost 700 combined yards on kickoff and punt returns.

Brown scored three touchdowns in a game five times this year and made at least two touchdown receptions in 10 games. He closed the year with five-consecutive 100-yard games and eclipsed the century mark seven times in the last nine games. Brown totaled at least eight receptions in the last seven games, including three games of double-digit receptions.

A three-year starter, Brown was previously selected the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Offensive Athlete of the Year and earned All-PSAC West First-Team honors at wide receiver for the third-straight year. He also became the first wide receiver named the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) Super Region One Offensive Player of the Year since the award was established in 2008.

Brown shattered the all-time school receiving records during his senior season. He finished his career with 3,761 receiving yards, which is over 1,000 yards more than the previous record and ranks second-most among active NCAA Division II players. Brown also sits fourth among active players at all NCAA levels with 43 career receiving touchdowns, which is 15 more than the previous school record. He closed his career with 222 receptions, which eclipsed the mark held by former NFL wide receiver and AFCA All-American Perry Kemp (1980-83) for more than three decades by 50-plus receptions.

A product of Westerville South in Columbus, Ohio, Brown is one of nine finalists for the 2016 Harlon Hill Trophy. He is one of only three Harlon Hill finalists to be recognized on the AFCA All-America Teams.
