Cal U starts year with win over NDC, 74-59

Backcourt of Glenn, Doran combine for 44 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and four steals

ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 11) – Behind 20-point games from senior guards Lana Doran (Northamptonshire, England/Barking Abbey) and Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport), the No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team opened the season with a 74-59 win against Notre Dame (Ohio) at the Conference Challenge hosted by Mercyhurst on Friday evening.

With the victory, the Vulcans start the year at 1-0 for the fourth time under head coach Jess Strom. Meanwhile, the Falcons fall to 0-1 to open the season.

Glenn led all players with 24 points after shooting 8-of-16 from the floor and seven-of-nine from the free-throw line. She also collected eight rebounds, four assists and two steals while playing 36 minutes in the win.

Doran scored 20 points on 8-of-16 from the field in her first game since the 2015 NCAA National Championship, as she missed all of last season due to injury. She also posted six rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Lakers. Junior Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished with 12 points and led the team with nine rebounds (four offensive).

The Vulcans shot 40.9 percent from the field (27-of-66) and also 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the free-throw line. In comparison, Notre Dame made 40.0 percent (24-of-60) after shooting just 3-of-18 from beyond the arc. Both teams finished with 39 rebounds and the Falcons scored 36 points from inside the paint. Cal U forced 28 turnovers that were converted into 26 points in the victory.

Senior Kelsey Miller paced the Falcons with 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting and also registered eight rebounds. Freshman Jessie Stout added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists off the bench, while junior Kim Cook led the team with nine rebounds.

Cal U continues play in Erie, Pennsylvania, tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 12, when it faces West Liberty at 3 p.m.
