Cal U earns win at Wheeling Jesuit, 3-1

Fletcher posts three points in victory; Exner tallies three saves

WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 4) – After falling behind in the early minutes, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team rallied for three-unanswered goals to record a 3-1 victory at Wheeling Jesuit in non-conference action on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 6-3-1 overall with a 4-1 mark against non-conference opponents. Meanwhile, the Cardinals fall to 4-7 on the season.

The Cardinals took the initial 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Owain Hawkins scored off a free kick before the Vulcans answered three minutes later when senior Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) tied the score at 1-1 on a header off a free kick from sophomore Christian Fletcher (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon). Sophomore Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) registered the eventual game-winning goal just before halftime at the 38:56-mark with his third goal of the season off an assist from freshman Antonio Simora (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep).

In the second period, the Vulcans held the one-goal advantage until the 78th minute when Fletcher added an insurance goal to seal the win.

Wheeling Jesuit held a 17-12 advantage in shots after attempting 10 in the first half. The Cardinals also held a slight 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal Gymnasium) posted five saves in the victory for his fifth win of the season. Wheeling Jesuit goalkeeper Tyler Shotwell posted two saves, both in the first half, in the losing effort.

Cal U returns to action Saturday, Oct. 8, when it hosts Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Philipsburg Soccer Facility at 1 p.m.
