CALIFORNIA (Oct. 8) – Behind goals from five different players, the Vulcans posted a 5-1 win over No.23 Millersvile in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 7-3-1 overall with a 3-2-1 mark in league action. The Vulcans registered their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2012 when they posted a 2-1 victory over then-No. 6 Gannon. Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 7-3-2 this season behind a 4-2-2 record in conference play.
The Vulcans struck first in the 14th minute when freshman
Cooper Amos (McDonald, Pa/West Allegheny) headed the ball over the keeper on an assist from senior
Cory Kuzilla (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek). Cal U increased its lead to 2-0 at the 30:50-mark when sophomore
Mike Cummings (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) headed a ball into the net off a free kick from classmate
Christian Fletcher (Moon Twp,Pa./Moon). Fletcher added a goal on a penalty kick in the 34th minute to make it 3-0 lead for the Vulcans. Freshman
Matt Light (Cleona, Pa/Annville Cleona) scored his first career goal in the 41st minute on a through ball from classmate
Antonio Simora (Erie, Pa/Cathedral Prep) to give Cal U a 4-0 advantage at halfitme.
Late in the second half, Millersville cut the deficit to 4-1 in the 83rd minute when
Nathan Delgado registered his third goal of the season. Cal U countered with an insurance goal at the 84:42-mark when senior
Nick Cichon (Monongahela, Pa/Ringgold) scored his first goal of the year with an assist from goalkeeper
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium).
Exner, a sophomore, recorded six saves while playing all 90 minutes to ern his sixth victory on the season. Millersville goalkeeper Darian McCauley registered one save in 45 minutes of play, while Coby Breen posted six saves in the second half.
Cal U finished with an 18-13 shot advantage and scored four goals on just six shots in the first half. The Marauders held an 8-5 edge in corner kicks after both teams registered five in the second half.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, when they host Mercyhurst in PSAC play at 6 p.m.
