LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Oct. 29) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team clinched a berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon following a 1-0 win at Lock Haven in league play.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 10-5-1 overall and finish conference action with 19 points behind a 6-4-1 mark. Cal U has now totaled double-digit wins for the first time since the 2011 season and has now qualified for the PSAC Tournament for the third-straight year. The Vulcans will face fourth-seeded Seton Hill in the quarterfinals of the league tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, Lock Haven closes the year at 5-11-1 overall with a 3-8 record in league play.
The teams combined for only four shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes, as the game was scoreless at halftime. Cal U scored game-winning goal at the 56:00-mark when freshman
Cooper Amos (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) registered his team-leading seventh goal of the season on a long pass from sophomore goalkeeper
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium), his third of the year. The Bald Eagles were unable to avoid the shutout despite out-shooting the Vulcans by a 5-4 margin in the second half.
Exner recorded his sixth shutout of the season after tallying five saves in 90 minutes of action on Saturday. Lock Haven goalkeeper Thomas McLain collected two saves in the losing effort.
Lock Haven finished with an 8-5 shot advantage, while Cal U posted a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans will travel to nearby Greensburg, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 1 to face Seton Hill in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament at 1 p.m.
