Cal U eliminated by Seton Hill, 4-0

Vulcans played 60-plus minutes down a player in quarterfinals of PSAC Tournament

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 1) – Playing over half the game down a player, the fifth-seeded Vulcans were eliminated from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament with a 4-0 loss to fourth-seeded Seton Hill at Dick's Sporting Goods Field on Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team finishes the year with a 10-6-1 record. The Vulcans totaled double-digit wins for the first since 2012 while qualifying for the PSAC Tournament for the fifth time in six years. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 12-7 overall and advance to face top-seeded Mercyhurst in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4, in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Vulcans nearly took the lead at the 19:45-mark when a shot by senior Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) hit the crossbar on an open net after the goalie challenged another player. Seton Hill broke the scoreless tie in the 26th minute when Louis Mason scored after executing a successful give-and-go to. Less than a minute later, the Griffins were awarded a penalty kick with the shot attempt sailing high of the goal. Taylor was then issued two yellow cards in less than three minutes, as the Vulcans were forced to play down a man with 15-plus minutes remaining in the first half. Seton Hill added to its lead at the 36:52-mark when Curtis Gallagher scored on a cross that was misplayed by a defender and left Gallagher with a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper.

Seton Hill stretched its lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute when Tom Urquhart scored off a cross from Rory McKinnon. The Griffins scored their final goal of the game at the 68:56-mark when McKinnon beat a defender one-on-one before placing the ball in the left side of the net.

Sophomore Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) registered seven saves on Tuesday, as he finishes the year with 91 saves – the most by a Cal U goalkeeper in over a decade. Seton Hill goalkeeper Austin Iddon tallied two saves in registering the shutout.

The Griffins finished the game with a 17-7 shot advantage after attempting 11 shots in the second half when the Vulcans were playing down a player. Seton Hill also posted a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
