Vulcans drop road contest to Gannon, 3-1

Cichon scores second goal of the season, Exner finishes with 10 saves

ERIE,Pa. (Oct.15) – Playing their first road game in over a week, the Vulcans dropped a 3-1 contest at Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday evening.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 7-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in league play. Meanwhile, Gannon improves to 9-3-1 this season behind a 5-2-1 mark in conference action.

Gannon started the scoring when Mathias Krigbaum scored on a shot that went under the cross bar in the 33rd minute off a pass from Hamza Mourchid. The Golden Knights extended the lead to 2-0 less than five minutes later when Hamza Mourchid scored his NCAA Division II-leading 17th goal of the season when he beat goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal Gymnasium) one-on-one in the 38th minute. Gannon added an insurance goal in the 67th minute when Sergio Kobowane beat Exner on a shot that just snuck in the right post. The Vulcans avoided the shutout just two minutes later in the 69th minute when senior Nick Cichon (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) broke through the defense off a long pass from sophomore Christian Fletcher (Moon Twp. Pa./ Moon) to score his second goal of the season.

Exner recorded 10 saves in the losing effort, his second-straight game of double-digit saves. Gannon goalkeeper Jorge Hernandez earned the win after making one save

Gannon out-shot Cal U by a 16-6 margin with the Vulcans getting five shots in the second half. The Vulcans finished with a 5-1 edge in corner kicks with four in the second half.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19, when they host Pitt-Johnstown for Senior Day at 5 p.m.
