CALIFORNIA (Jan. 6) – In a rematch of the last year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team featured three starters who posted double-doubles, including junior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) who tied the game with seven seconds remaining in regulation, before the Vulcans earned a 79-73 overtime victory against West Chester on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 9-3 overall with a 7-2 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Rams fall to 8-5 on the year behind a 5-4 conference mark after suffering their first loss in over a month.
Sophomore forward
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp./Central Valley) recorded her sixth double-double of the season after leading the team with 21 points and setting a career high with 17 rebounds (six offensive) in 45 minutes, also a career high. Barrett ranks fourth in the PSAC this season with 10.6 rebounds per game and also ranks among league leaders in scoring with 14.1 points per game.
Glenn registered her first double-double of the year after posting 18 points behind 9-of-11 from the free-throw line and 12 rebounds (three offensive). She nearly collected a triple-double, as she finished with a season-high eight assists. Sophomore
Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) also recorded a double-double, which was her third in five games, tallying 15 points, 13 rebounds (nine offensive), three steals and two assists in 43 minutes. Freshman
Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) scored 11 points in 36 minutes, both season highs, off the bench.
West Chester opened the game with a layup from senior Brittany Sicinski before Cal U posted six-consecutive points capped by a layup from Parsons at the 7:50-mark to give the Vulcans a 6-2 lead. The Golden Rams responded by scoring nine-straight points to take an 11-6 lead with 5:29 remaining in the quarter. Barrett was able to end the run at the 3:22-mark with a layup, which was the first score for Cal U in almost five minutes. After a bucket from Suckling, the two teams traded baskets before a tip-in from Parsons as time expired gave the Vulcans a 16-15 lead at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter started with a quick basket from Suckling to increase the Cal U lead to 18-15 with 9:13 remaining in the first half. The two teams traded baskets for the remaining of the half, as Barrett made two free-throws with under a minute left to give the Vulcans a 33-30 lead at halftime.
Cal U began the third quarter with the initial six points of the half to it extend the lead to 39-30 at the 7:16-mark. After two quick scores from West Chester, senior
Paige Wright (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) posted a layup to begin an 11-5 run that eclipsed five minutes to give the Vulcans a 50-39 lead with 1:17 left in the third quarter. Both teams were able to add a score before the completion of the quarter to give Cal U a 52-40 lead to start the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter started with two quick scores from the Vulcans to increase their lead to 55-40, which was their largest of the game. The Golden Rams responded with a 14-3 run in just over five minutes to cut the deficit to 58-54 with 3:42 remaining in regulation. Cal U shot one-of-seven from the floor and had six turnovers during the span. After the two teams traded scores, West Chester scored nine-unanswered points in just over one minute to take a 65-62 lead with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. With just seven seconds left, Glenn hit her first three-pointer of the game to tie the game and eventually send the contest to overtime with the score 65-65.
The Vulcans scored the opening four points of the overtime period before the Golden Rams managed to tie the game again at 69-69 with 3:27 remaining in the period. Cal U was able to shoot five-of-six from the free-throw line in the final three minutes to regain the lead after a 9-2 run to capture a 79-73 victory.
The Vulcans shot 31.8 percent (27-of-85) from the floor yet only 3-of-20 (15.0 percent) from beyond the arc. In comparison, West Chester made 38.7 percent (29-of-75) from the field and just 1-14 (7.1 percent) from long range. Cal U held a 61-49 advantage in rebounds and also forced 22 turnovers in the victory.
Sicinski tallied a game-high 27 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field. Senior Dallas Ely recorded 15 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists, while classmate Anna Kuntz led the team with 11 rebounds.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Jan. 9, when they host Seton Hill at the Convocation Center with tip at 3 p.m.
