CALIFORNIA (Jan. 9) – Despite three players scoring in double-digits, including a career-high 32 points from junior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport), the Vulcans suffered an 83-81 overtime loss to Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 9-4 overall with a 7-3 conference record after splitting back-to-back overtime games. Meanwhile, the Griffins won for the fourth time in five games to improve to 9-7 on the year behind a 5-5 league mark.
Glenn set a career high with 32 points after shooting 10-of-22 from the field and a season-high 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. She also added four rebounds (all offensive), six assists and four steals while playing all 45 minutes on Saturday. The leading scorer in the PSAC, Glenn has scored at least 20 points seven times this season and has scored 30 points three times in her career.
Junior
Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) posted her second double-double of the season after registering a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds (seven offensive) in 37 minutes, while sophomore
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp./Central Valley) recorded her second-straight double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds (five offensive). Freshman
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) recorded four points and five steals in 19 minutes while making her collegiate debut.
The game opened with the two teams trading scores before a pair of free-throws from Martin gave the Vulcans a 6-2 lead with 7:56 left in the first quarter. The Griffins responded by taking a 10-9 lead with seven points from junior Mariah Wells. Cal U mounted a 10-0 run to retake the lead at 19-10 with 2:14 remaining in the period. Seton Hill was able to cut the deficit to 19-15 as the quarter came to an end. The Vulcans began the second quarter with a 12-4 run that spanned four minutes to extended the lead to 31-19 with 5:59 left in the half. The Griffins later responded by scoring seven-unanswered points to cut the deficit to 39-30 at halftime.
Seton Hill started the third quarter with a 12-4 run to cut the lead to 43-42 at the 4:42-mark of the third quarter. The Griffins later took their first lead of the game since the 5:47-mark of the first quarter on a three-pointer from sophomore Alexandra Hay that made the score 45-43 with 2:55 left in the third quarter. Cal U was able to retake the lead after scoring seven-unanswered points to end the quarter with a 50-47 lead.
The Vulcans were able to score the first two baskets of the fourth quarter before the two teams alternated scores until a jumper from Barrett extended the Cal U lead to 60-55 with 6:25 remaining in regulation. Seton Hill was able to cut the lead to one point before four-consecutive free throws from the Vulcans made the score 64-59 with 1:55 left in the quarter. After a pair of free-throws from Glenn, Cal U held a 70-67 lead with 12 seconds left in regulation. On the following possession, Hay made a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 70-70 and force the game to overtime.
The Griffins were able to score the opening six points of overtime to take a 76-70 lead before the Vulcans countered by scoring nine-consecutive points to regain the lead at 79-76 with 1:35 remaining in the period. Seton Hill completed a three-point play to tie the game before taking the lead on the ensuing possession, 81-79, with 52 seconds left in the period. Cal U was able to tie the score on a lay-up from Martin with 37 second remaining to play. The Griffins then hit a pair of free-throws to take the lead with the eventual final score of 83-81.
Cal U shot 35.1 percent (26-of-74) from the floor and just 3-of-16 from beyond the arc. In comparison, Seton Hill made 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the field. Both teams totaled 39 rebounds and the Vulcans forced 25 turnovers.
The Griffins had five players score in double-digits, including Wells who scored 17 points with seven rebounds. Classmate Kinross Obiefule posted 15 points on seven-of-nine shooting from the floor, while Hay registered 13 points on three-of-six shooting from beyond the arc, including the game-tying bucket at the buzzer of regulation.
Cal U returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 13, when it hosts PSAC West-leading Gannon in the Convocation Center at 5:30 p.m.
