Vulcans defeat Slippery Rock, 64-52

Martin, Parsons and Barrett combine for 40 points, 42 rebounds

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Jan. 16) — Behind double-doubles from three starters, including a career-high 18 rebounds from sophomore Seairra Barrett (Center Twp./Central Valley), the Vulcans earned a 64-52 victory against Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday night.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 11-4 overall behind a 9-3 record in league play. The Vulcans have now won 28-straight games against The Rock dating back to the 2001-02 season. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock falls to 8-9 on the year with a 5-7 conference record and have lost six of its last seven games. 

Junior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) posted 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the floor and a career-high 11 rebounds (eight offensive). She ranks third on the team this season in scoring and has recoreded three double-doubles this year. Martin has also scored at least 15 points three times this season.

Sophomore Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) registered 13 points and 13 rebounds (five offensive), while Barrett finished with 11 points and 18 rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the year and also collected a season-high four steals in the win. Junior Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) posted 11 points behind seven-of-eight from the free-throw line and also posted six rebounds, six assists and three steals in all 40 minutes. 

Cal U opened the game on a 10-4 run that eclipsed almost four minutes before The Rock scored five of the next six points to cut the lead to 11-9 with 3:04 left in the first quarter. The period ended after a Glenn jumper increased the Cal U lead to 13-9. The Vulcans were able to start the second quarter by scoring eight of the first 10 points to increase the lead to 21-11 with 6:39 remaining in the half. Slippery Rock responded by rallying for an 11-4 run over six minutes to cut the lead to 22-22 at the break.

The second half started with Cal U scoring the first nine points of the half to extend the lead to 34-22 after a lay-up from Martin with 5:57 left in the quarter. The Rock was able to score six of the next 11 points to cut the lead to 39-28 with 3:59 remaining in the period. Cal U was able to score seven-unanswered points before Slippery Rock responded with five-straight points to cut the lead to 48-33 at the end of the third quarter. After trading scores to start the fourth quarter, The Rock scored 10-consecutive points to cut the lead to 55-48 with 2:21 left to play. The teams traded scores before the Vulcans made four free-throws to end the game with the score 64-52. 

Cal U finished the game shooting 31.9 percent (22-of-69) from the floor after going just 10-of-39 in the first half. In comparison, The Rock made 29.3 percent (17-of-58) from the field. The Vulcans out-rebounded Slippery Rock by a 53-44 margin on Saturday.

Junior Lexi Carpenter scored a team-high 16 points and collected seven rebounds (five offensive), while sophomore Ciara Patterson posted 15 points. Sophomore Mallory Heinle also recorded seven rebounds (two offensive) in the loss.

Cal U returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 20, when it travles to face Edinboro at 5:30 p.m.
