Women's Basketball falls at Edinboro, 73-54

Vulcans out-scored by a 17-2 margin over final six minutes, collect only five defensive rebounds

EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 20) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team suffered a 73-54 loss at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 11-5 overall behind a 9-4 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots extend their winning streak to four games and improve to 13-6 this season with an 8-5 record in conference action.
 
Junior Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led the team in scoring with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She also led the team with nine rebounds (eight offensive) while playing 34 minutes against the Fighting Scots. Martin is averaging 15.3 points and 7.8 rebounds over the last four games behind a pair of double-doubles.

Classmate Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) finished with 15 points while shooting just 6-of-22 from the floor and collected four steals. Sophomores Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) and Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) both tallied seven points and six rebounds in the loss on Wednesday.

Cal U opened the game on an 8-0 run with Martin scoring six points before Edinboro cut the deficit to 8-4 midway through the first quarter. Glenn later scored four-straight points to stretch the lead to 14-6 at the 3:07-mark in the quarter. The Fighting Scots answered with an 11-3 run over five-plus minutes to tie the game at 17-17 with 6:01 remaining in the second quarter. Cal U was limited to just 1-of-11 shooting from the floor during the run. Following a jumper by Martin, the Fighting Scots took their first lead of the game and mounted a 13-2 rally to take a 30-21 lead with 4:00 left before halftime. Edinboro stretched the first-half lead to as many as 11 points, 36-25, before taking a 37-29 lead at the break.

The Vulcans posted a 7-2 run early in the third quarter to the trim the deficit to 41-36 on a jumper by Parsons with 7:01 left in the quarter. Cal U later worked the deficit down 47-44 after Barrett converted a three-point play at the 2:48-mark before Edinboro took a 54-46 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Vulcans later managed to cut the score to 56-52 on a layup by Parsons with 6:26 left to play, as the Fighting Scots were held without a field for over three minutes. However, Edinboro then rallied to score eight-unanswered points and closed the game on a 17-2 run after limiting Cal U to only one field goal in six-plus minutes.
 
Cal U finished the game shooting 32.8 percent (22-of-67) from the floor after making only 2-of-14 three-pointers (14.3 percent). The Vulcans also matched a season low with just eight free-throws attempts. In comparison, the Fighting Scots made 52.8 percent (28-of-53) from the field and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the charity stripe. Edinboro registered a sizeable 44-27 rebounding advantage and scored 40 points from inside the paint.

Edinboro senior Aignee' Freeland led all players with 26 points on 12-of-14 shooting and also collected 13 rebounds (eight offensive). Classmate Lauren Hippo finished with 23 points and eight rebounds, while junior Katie Fischer added a double-double of 15 points and 11 assists.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 23, when it hosts Mercyhurst at the Convocation Center with tipoff at 3 p.m.
