Volleyball claims two wins in crossover play

Matusik registers a combined 31 points; three Vulcans record double-doubles

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 25) – The Vulcans opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Friday with a 3-2 victory (25-14, 23-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-8) over East Stroudsburg before posting a 3-0 win against Kutztown (25-16, 25-12, 25-14) at Hamer Hall.

With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 4-8 overall after winning three of its last four matches.

Against the Warriors (5-7), junior Abby Matusik (Mars, Pa./Mars) led the team with 14 kills on 41 attempts, while senior Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) added 10 kills and classmate Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) collected nine kills on a .438 hitting percentage. Juniors Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) directed the offense with 19 and 11 assists, respectively.

Sophomore libero Emily Berry (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) paced the defense with 18 digs, as Cal U featured four players with double-digit digs. Fellow sophomore Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) totaled 15 digs, while Litoborski and Matusik tallied double-doubles against East Stroudsburg with 14 and 10 digs, respectively. The trio of freshman Emily Bucklin (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville), Fouzie and Matusik each collected four blocks in the match.

Against the Golden Bears (2-10), Leto and Matusik each led the team with 10 kills and four other players collected at least four kills. The offense was guided in the sweep with 18 assists from Litoborski and 16 assists from sophomore Taylor Solo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Matusik also registered four service aces, while Leto and Solo both added three service aces against Kutztown.

Berry and Leto led the defensive effort with 15 and 12 digs, respectively, while Litoborski tallied seven digs. Bucklin helped control the net with three blocks in the sweep.

Cal U continues PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 26, when it hosts West Chester and Cheyney in Hamer Hall, starting at 10 a.m.
