Men's Soccer falls at Slippery Rock, 3-1

Vulcans play second half down one player; allow PK goal, score 'own goal'

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Sept. 15) - The Vulcans suffered a 3-1 loss at Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. Meanwhile, The Rock move to 4-1 this season behind a 2-0 mark in conference action.

Cal U took a quick 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when senior Jesse Scheirer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), who was named PSAC Athlete of the Week yesterday, scored his fourth goal of the season after receiving a pass from senior Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Repbulic/Roosevelt (Iowa)). The Vulcans held the lead until the 42nd minute when Ryan Lutke scored on a penalty kick after Cal U was given a red card in the box. Less than 90 seconds later, Matt Sangermano gave The Rock a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, Slippery Rock added an insurance goal due to an 'own goal' at the 68:25-mark. The Rock registered 11 shots during the second period while the Vulcans played down one defender due to the red card at the end of the first half.

Slippery Rock held a 19-11 advantage in shots and Cal U placed only two shots on target. The Rock also held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Aaron Donley (Fredricksburg, Va./Stafford) posted three saves in the first half in the losing effort before freshman Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) collected six saves while playing the second half.

Cal U will play again on Saturday, Sept. 19, when it travels to face West Chester at 12 p.m.
