CALIFORNIA (Sept. 12) - The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team closed the third-annual Vulcan Invitational by dropping matches to Saginaw Valley State and Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The Vulcans drop to 1-7 this season with a 1-3 mark at the weekend home event.
Cal U began play on Saturday with a 3-0 loss (17-25, 18-25, 15-25) against Saginaw Valley State. Freshman Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) led the team with nine kills and junior Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) registered six kills, as the Vulcans were held to a .091 hitting percentage. Junior Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) posted 17 assists and 15 digs for her third assist/dig double-double of the weekend.
The Vulcans dropped a 3-2 match (25-21, 18-25, 22-25, 26-24, 16-14) to Bridgeport to close out the weekend tournament. Hayes paced the team with 17 kills and classmate Abby Matusik (Mars, Pa./Mars) compiled 16 kills in the loss, while Barrett added 13 kills. Junior Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) and Litoborski totaled 26 and 25 assists, respectively against the Cardinals.
On the defensive side, Matusik registered 16 digs and freshman Bayleana Sowers (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) posted 15 digs. Scurpa recorded an assist/dig double-double by registering 11 digs and freshman Emily Bucklin (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) controlled the net with eight blocks.
Cal U returns to the court on Saturday, Sept. 19, when it travels to Philippi, West Virginia, to face Alderson Broaddus at 1 p.m.
