Vulcans earn win at Alderson Broaddus, 3-0

Matusik leads team with 14 kills, 18 digs; records second-straight kill/dig double-double

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (Sept. 19) – Led by a kill/dig double-double by junior Abby Matusik (Mars, Pa./Mars), the Vulcans snapped a three-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) at Alderson Broaddus on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team moves to 2-7 overall while playing its second road match of the season. Meanwhile, Alderson Broaddus falls to 4-8 this year after suffering its fourth-straight loss.

Matusik led the team with 14 kills on a .242 hitting percentage, while also pacing the team with 18 digs. She recorded a kill/dig double-double for the second-straight match, totaling a combined 30 kills and 34 digs.

Freshman Emily Bucklin (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) totaled 10 kills on a .588 hitting percentage and senior Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) posted nine kills while hitting at an impressive .692 clip. Junior Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) directed the offense with 28 assists, while classmate Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) collected 19 assists in the sweep.

In addition, sophomore Emily Berry (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) added 16 digs and Litoborski finished with nine digs. Fouzie controlled the net with four blocks against the Battlers.

The Vulcans led throughout the entirety of the first set after posting a .326 hitting percentage. Cal U jumped out to a 5-2 lead on a kill by Matusik before later collecting five-straight points to take a 10-4 lead on a bad set. The teams then traded runs of three-consecutive points before the Vulcans won four of five points to take a 17-12 lead on back-to-back kills by Matusik. Cal U later won three of four points before claiming the 25-20 win on a kill by Matusik.

In the second set, the teams combined for 10 ties and four lead changes. Cal U won the opening two points before Alderson Broaddus rallied to win five of the next six points to take a 5-3 lead. After the teams traded points, the Vulcans earned six of eight points to take an 11-10 lead on a kill by senior Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata), who was playing for the first time in two weeks. Alderson Broaddus responded to win seven of the next 10 points to reclaim the lead at 17-14. The Vulcans then won five-straight points to force the Battlers to call a timeout while trailing 19-17. Alderson Broaddus managed to tie the score at 19-19 before Cal U answered with five-straight points before earning the 25-20 win on a kill by junior Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell).

The Vulcans committed only four errors and finished with a .341 hitting percentage in the third set. The teams traded points throughout the opening half of the set before Cal U won six-straight points to take a 15-11 lead on a service ace by Berry. The Battlers later won five of six points to cut the deficit to 19-18 before the Vulcans responded with three-straight points to stretch the lead to 22-18. The teams traded points to close the set and match with Fouzie registering a kill to cap the 25-21 victory.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when it hosts in-region rival and No. 10 Wheeling Jesuit in Hamer Hall at 7 p.m.
