Vulcans surge past UDC in second half, 2-1

Cal U off to best start since being unbeaten through seven games in 2011

ARLINGTON, Va. (Sept. 12) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals in a span of just over 11 minutes, including the game-winner in the 80th minute, on Saturday afternoon in a 2-1 victory at District of Columbia.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 3-1 overall to mark their best start to a season since being unbeaten through seven games (6-0-1) in 2011. Meanwhile, the Firebirds fall to 0-3-1 this year while Saturday marked their home opener.

UDC took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Kevin Ortez scored on a shot from 20 yards out. The Vulcans answered at the 68:39-mark when senior Jesse Scheirer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) scored from inside the box following a pass from freshman Mike Cummings (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny). In the 80th minute, freshman Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) headed in a cross from senior Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt (Iowa)) for his first career goal.

The Vulcans tied their season high with 18 shots and held an 18-11 shot advantage. Cal U registered a sizeable 11-4 edge in corner kicks with nine corners in the second half, while the Firebirds were whistled for 22 fouls.

Senior goalkeeper Aaron Donley (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) tallied a pair of saves while playing all 90 minutes to earn his third victory of the season.

Cal U opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when it travels to face Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
